Who doesn’t love a good fashion throwback? And bonus points if said throwback is also the current hot trend…again!
This week I’m crushing on the controversial underwear-as-outerwear slip dress and the uber comfy Birkenstock (remind me again why these ever went out of style in the first place?).
Let’s have a closer look at two of the most sought-after fashion staples of the 90’s.
Wiki reminds us that of the designers most notably associated with the slip dress include John Galliano, whose debut design for Dior was a lace-trimmed slip dress worn by Diana in 1996, which is likely around the time the spaghetti strapped satin wonder became all the rage and was seen at pretty much every dressy event. Who didn’t want to be Princess Diana in the early 1990’s!
Although this novelty soon wore off, it has made a major comeback in recent years. Only now it’s not only something to wear to a fancy dress or matric ball. You can now wear your slip dress with just about anything, to anywhere.
Who knows how long the slip dress is going to stick around this time, so why not make the most of it by styling yours with a few casual items from your wardrobe, whether you’re on your way to work, a meetup with the girls or date night.
Why not pair your slip dress with another 90’s favourite, the Birkenstock.
Now, if you’re over thirty or in your late twenties, I know you owned a pair of these babies in some form, size and colour back in the lovely 90s, but the Birkenstock actually has a pretty amazing birth story.
The sandal was founded in Germany and after World War II (1939-1945) was popular among returning soldiers because of its orthopedic support.
American, Margot Fraser “discovered” Birkenstock sandals while visiting a spa in Germany. She gained relief from a foot condition and founded a trading company called Birkenstock Footprint Sandals, Inc., in Novato, California, based on her enthusiasm for the sandals.
The rest, as you know, is history and in the early 1990’s “Birks” enjoyed a surge of popularity.
Let’s all rock the 90’s this Summer!
