Best Places To Lunch With Mom this Mothers’ Day

April 22, 2018

It’s that time of year again when we pull out all the stops to show the women who raised us, just how incredibly special they are to us. Yes, just in case it slipped your minds, on 13 May we celebrate Mothers’ day, and if you’re not sure where to take mom for some spoils, then don’t worry, because I’ve taken care of that for you.

Our mamas absolutely love quality time with their children, so it will no doubt blow her away when surprised to a lovely afternoon tea or lunch at her favourite restaurant with the most beautiful views. Whether your mom loves to just relax with her tea while she takes in her surrounds or whether she prefers long walks after, one thing we know for sure is that when it comes to mother’s day celebrations, we never compromise.

Why we can all relate to the Mother’s Day Movie – Review

September 3, 2016

I absolutely love this movie! This time it’s not due to the great acting, or lack thereof. I love the Mother’s Day movie, because it is basically every complicated domestic drama all wrapped into one. It’s just so relate-able and even though some of the issues are underplayed and others a tad bit exaggerated, I believe everyone watching will take away a lesson from it, no matter how big or small.

I first watched the movie by myself, expecting it will not be any good. Truth is, I enjoyed it so much, I watched it again a couple days later and asked hubby to join. It was like I never watched it before. True the acting wasn’t always good and production wasn’t the best, but I think they were pretty smart to use that many real-life scenarios which all effect us, on some level, every single day.

Moms are suckers for these kind of things and this mom (moi) was no different. Here’s why we can all relate:

The Annoying Sugar-Daddy Ex-husband:

Sandy (Jennifer Aniston) “with two boys” (you’ll get the quotation marks once you watch the movie) has a hard time accepting her ex-husband Henry’s sudden elopement to a girl much, much younger than him. Whatever Sandy has, she seems to have twice as much – longer, leaner legs, killer bikini body, the husband and what pisses Sandy off even more than this is the obvious fact that step-momma-tween genuinely seems to be hitting it off with the boys. Enjoy the emotional roller-coaster as sandy takes you through literally all the steps to acceptance. IF she gets there…

The Widower:

Bradley (Jason Sudeikis) “with two girls” (again, quotes will make sense when you see the movie) lost his Marine corps wife a couple years ago. He is now a widower and has been left to take over the role of both father and mother, which on occasion includes buying tampons for his 16 year old. He makes a potentially life-altering connection on one of his tampon buying excursions. Brad also owns a fitness club, of which the members include nuns?! He also coaches his daughter’s soccer team and can do a mean freestyle karaoke. But everyone gets lonely sometimes…

Inter-Racial Marriage:

All Jesse (Kate Hudson) wants for Mother’s day is to reconnect with her estranged mother, who stopped contacting her altogether when she got involved with an Indian guy. It’s been years and Jesse is now happily married to the ‘towel head’ and they share a gorgeous two year old son. So just how does Jesse get her parents to accept her back into their lives? Sometimes, when put into a life threatening situation, people tend to see through a new pair of eyes.

Gay Marriage:

Gabi (Sarah Chalke) is Jesse’s sister and neighbour and has a slightly better relationship with their parents. There’s just one teeny tiny problem; Jesse is gay and lives with her wife and adopted son. Considering her mother’s already unfair views on interracial relationships, she feels forced to hide her homosexuality from her mom. But when their parents suddenly surprise them with a visit, all hell breaks loose.

Abandonment Issues:

Kristin (Brit Robertson) is in a committed relationship with a guy who worships her and with whom she shares an adorable one year old daughter; But no matter how many times Zack (Jack whitehall) wants to talk about putting a ring on it, things go sour, mainly Kristin. Kristin goes sour. You see, she was adopted and because she has never met her mother, feels she does not know herself either. However, she is dead set on meeting her birth mother, before she loses the love of her life. When she finally finds the women who birthed her and gave her away, and who has such a stronghold on her life, she musters up the courage to approach her. Kristin’s biggest fear is getting rejected.

No-Time-For-Family Career Woman:

Miranda (Julia Roberts) is beautiful, successful and an ultra-famous talk-show host. The idea of ever starting a family of her own, has been left behind a long time ago. Partly because of the demands of her career, but ultimately because of something much deeper.

Marvelous Mothers Breakfast

May 7, 2016

I am already looking forward to next year’s Marvelous Moms Breakfast!

I immediately bought my ticket from Computicket when I saw this event advertised in the mall one day while out doing my shopping. I have to admit, I got it purely on impulse and my inherent curiosity, with no idea what to expect other than the already obvious fact that I was going to enjoy breakfast with a few other marvelous moms. This, for me, was enough. As you know by now, I jump at any opportunity that involves me getting to meet other fabulous moms and boy was I happy I jumped at this one.

The event was well planned and beautifully organized. I was particularly impressed with the attention to detail in the french country decor.

On my arrival, I was immediately escorted to my table and goodie bag with a host of products from stores all over the mall. I already felt spoiled and was diligently offered a cup of coffee before the Mothers day celebrations began. The energy all around me was tangible and infectious.

The MC and Radio Helderberg presenter, Ricardo, was quite a treat with his wit and charisma and immediately put everyone at ease. Throughout the event, he never tired from interacting with the crowd and making the mommas feel as special as they truly are. This impressed me and spoke volumes of the amount of thought the organisers put into this day.

Besides the great spokesperson, we also had Sorbet, Inglot and Curves at our service for any beauty and wellness questions and free makeovers. Although the advice was appreciated, I rather enjoyed the freebies and vouchers more. I mean, who doesn’t love a freebie!?

But, the highlight of the morning was no doubt, the hour long pep talk we received from renowned fashion stylists and best friends, Marilize De Clercq and Andrea Timmis.

Marilize, I was happy to learn, is an image consultant and personal shopper for fabiani, she’s featured on Top Billing, Pasella and Expresso and together with Andrea, been appointed as Canal Walk’s stylist for their Season Fashion Trend Catalogue.

That’s not all – Marilize is also design director for Captive8 – a plus size female clothing brand which has made its mark in the South African fashion industry.  You can read more about this phenomenal mom on The Vivid Luxury Blog.

She also provides personal shopping & styling to her clients. Call 082 223 6007 or Email styling@marilizedeclercq.co.za and visit her styling realm at http://www.marilizedeclercq.co.za

After discussing the latest trends and learning about how to embrace and flatter the body parts we are most unhappy with, my mind was full and satisfied. And so was my tummy, after devouring the most delish bacon and eggs wrap from Torrador and then also devouring the carrot cake in record time.

2 hours of pure bliss and our breakfast finally came to an end. It is hard to believe I paid only R150 for such an absolutely amazing time. I guess money really can’t buy happiness and great company.

I want to thank Cape Gate and Torrador, along with all the other sponsors mentioned above, for the truly Marvelous Mothers Day treat.

Here’s a few styling tips I learned from the ladies:

  • Nudes are the new black
  • It hasn’t been called ‘peach’ since after the 90’s. It’s now nude, tan or rose gold.
  • You MUST invest in a nude shoe and bag
  • Diagonal lines are flattering for the figure
  • The three top looks for this season: Boho (Prints), Sport lux (Sneakers) and 70’s (Colour)
  • If you’re going for any of these looks, keep it minimal and classic.
  • Embrace your big booty. Instead of hiding it, show it off by wearing the right colours.
  • Make sure you wear the right color clothes for you. This can make you look at least 5 years younger.
  • Tussles are in. The older you are the less tussles.
  • Get at least 4 pants, 4 tops and shirts and 4 blazers and jackets. Then make sure they all go together.
  • throw out things you do not wear. When in doubt, throw them out.
  • Double breasted coats and polo necks are not flattering for big busts.
  • You need at least one pair of ripped or distressed jeans in your wardrobe.
  • Make sure to wear the right underwear. Size and style.
  • To look taller, make sure your pants and shoes are the same colour.

Happy Mother’s day Fab moms!

Marvelous and Unique Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

April 26, 2016

If you are anything like me, or just a busy mom yourself, you have probably not given much thought for Mother’s Day gifts just yet. And you were most likely not going to either. At least not until it was too late and before you knew it, you end up grabbing the usual suspects – Roses and Chocolates. Just like last year, and the year before.

Hey, which is not a bad choice! Everyone likes flowers and loves chocolates even more. I bet moms are always genuinely happy to receive a carefully made-up bouquet of flowers. It reminds her of your very generous gesture whenever she passes her colorful bunch and puts in clean water…and it dies.

I thought, maybe, it will be fun to try something a little different this year; because our mothers are all different and special and should be celebrated as such. So why not surprise the woman who reared you with a gift that will allow her some time on this special day, to enjoy what it is she loves.

You know your mom best, so you will have a better idea of what she enjoys; but if you need a nudge in the right direction, here I have selected the perfect gift for 7 types of moms.

1.The Artsy Mom

These suddenly spiraled into popularity. If your mom’s been hinting about wanting to escape to far away places where her mind can recharge before she returns back to the hustle and bustle, then an adult coloring book might be just the escape she needs. It’s been proven to relieve stress, have therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring about more mindfulness.

You can find a nice selection of coloring books of all genres at Loot.co.za and Takealot.co.za

2.The Coffee Addict Mom

If your mom loves coffee, she will love you forever (as though she has a choice) if you get her a coffee press. It’s compact, it’s convenience, quick and makes a mean cuppa. You may as well make sure she enjoys her favorite beverage in style.

Yuppiechef has a beautiful selection of french copper presses.

3.The Crafty mom

And just like the coloring books made its come-back, so did the knitted beanie. Or maybe it’s never left. What do I know! If your mom likes to occupy her time with DIY projects, then maybe she will enjoy knitting too. Have you been any fashion outlet recently…knitwear everywhere! Why pay those hideous prices when we have mom!

I don’t know much about knitting, but you’ll find everything you need at Wooljunction

4.The Sentimental Mom

Nothing brings greater pleasure to any mom, than being surrounded by her family. Why not then hire a professional photographer for the day, round up the entire family, find a beautiful location and create memories to last a lifetime.

As seen in the below picture, Photofuzion, captures those raw moments beautifully.

5.The Fashionista Mom

Marvelous moms styling workshop is hosting this event on Saturday, 7 May at the Cape Gate Shopping Centre. Each ticket includes a breakfast wrap, hot and cold drinks and fabulous goodie bag and cost only R150.

Book your seat now at Computicket. I have!

6.The Gardening Mom

If mom loves to garden, then she will love an indoor hanging plant from Cape Garden Center

7.The Fit Mom

Another fun and fit way to bond with mom this mother’s day, is to go for a sunset, sunrise, garden or beach yoga class together. Whatever your preference, speak to the team at The Om Revolution. Classes are as low as R40pp.
