New Movie Review – I, Tonya

January 30, 2018

Two triple axels, various ice skating records and all the technique in the world, means absolutely nothing when overshadowed by one of the most sensational scandals of all time.

I, TONYA is a comedic drama that tells the tale of a talented sports star whose success is destroyed by her troubled childhood, her mother’s abuse and her stormy relationships.  Although it initially seems like the movie is actually a comedic spoof of the heartlessness of a tabloid-driven nation, you soon realise that it is about more than meets the eye.

Ambitious and goal-driven from an early age, former figure skating champion, Tonya Harding (Robbie) was well on her way to becoming one of the world’s biggest ice skating legends.

Her first big breakthrough came in 1991 when she won (with her first triple axel) the U.S. Championships and was awarded the event’s first 6.0 ever given to a single female skater for technical merit. At the 1991 World Championships, she again completed the triple axel (becoming the first American woman to perform it at an international event) but finished second to Kristi Yamaguchi. Unfortunately, that is not what she is remembered for. Her dreams and career were shattered by her alleged association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly-executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor, Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver), by her ex-husband (Sebastian Stan) and bodyguard (Paul Walter Hauser).

This award-winning film is based on the true events behind this spectacle and will keep you glued to your seat until the very end.

The film also boasts an excellent cast and has already received a lot of praise for outstanding performances by the lead characters. Margot Robbie is commended for her soulful portrayal of Tonya Harding in this fascinating story, while Sebastian Stan can be seen in the role of her ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. This handsome actor, from New York, previously featured in several television shows, such as Law and Order and Gossip Girl, and also starred in the Captain America Franchise, Riki and the Flash, The Martian and many more.

I, TONYA promises to captivate audiences, not only because of outstanding acting and direction but also because it proves the innocence of a woman who was judged by the world and abused by those who were supposed to love her most.

With 24 awards and 77 nominations under its belt, I, Tonya will hit the South African cinema circuit on 16 February 2018.

New Year Recharge: The Best, Most Beautiful, and Affordable Health and Beauty Spa’s around Cape Town

January 26, 2018

After the hustle and bustle of preparing the kids for the new school year, getting back into the swing of things at work and not to mention the hordes and hordes of homework your children’s been bringing home since; it’s safe to say it has been a pretty crazy January. Sure, we’re all extremely happy this month is almost over, but what difference does that fact really make to our overall mental and physical exhaustion? It simply means we’re heading into a brand new month with the same old baggage ( not to mention, another month closer to day zero!). We have a lot on our plates, us parents, and we absolutely deserve some time away, even if it’s just for few hours, to recharge. In fact, Lesley and I have just decided a couple days ago that we’re doing just that, and when my best friend called me up yesterday and demanded it’s high time the two of us plan a spa day together again, I felt inspired to do this post, and found the best, most beautiful and affordable health and beauty spa’s Cape Town has to offer.

Hint: My list does not include the 12 Apostles, One & Only, or the Taj.

These were selected based on reasonable affordability and locations that guarantee the best views of the Cape.

How will your Spa experience be affected by the current water crisis?

Not much, if at all. I have personally called many of these Spa’s on the list and most of them are using natural spring water. However, this is subject to change and it is, therefore, best to inquire about this again upon your booking.

How Are We Preparing Our Kids for Careers of the Future

January 22, 2018

It is either very scary or very exciting to know that in another 10 years from now, our children will find themselves either in, or working towards, a career that does not even exist today. How that makes you feel depends on how prepared you are. According to the World Economic Forum, approximately 65 percent of the children entering primary school now will fall into this category. So, how are we preparing our kids for something that doesn’t exist yet?

Of cause sending them to the best schools, able to meet and exceed their specific needs, is a wonderful opportunity and one many of us are aspiring to. Sadly the reality is not everyone can afford to; and even though a good education is without a doubt necessary, I believe the true leaders of tomorrow, the ones who will be more resilient, innovative, tenacious, passionate, and even just likable, are not only made in the classroom but also at home.

I had an interesting conversation with my GP the other day. After confirming my ear infection we got to chatting and both discovered the other’s love for books. She confessed her obsession was to the point where she no longer had any available space for the books she keeps bringing home, but was caught by surprise when one afternoon she found her almost two-year-old daughter, on her own, completely drawn-in by one of her many story books. Right there she vowed to never give up on her love for reading, no matter how insane her obsession was. It was clearly developing her daughter into a great leader.

It’s okay to expect the school we pay hefty school fees to, to ensure our kids get the best education to prepare them for the brightest future, but in order to survive in an ever-evolving society we have to understand it is simply not enough for kids to learn – they need to LOVE to learn. By teaching our kids the value of sharing with others, we’re creating team players, by teaching them to respect others’ differences we’re creating compassionate leaders. Vocational learning and STEM education are, therefore, most effective when balanced with a healthy dose of emotional intelligence which is sure to be among the top 10 job skills by 2020.

We do not have control over the future, or what it has in store for the next generation, but we do have influence over our kids – at breakfast, the dinner table, while driving or walking them to school or putting them to bed at night. Every opportunity we are given to interact with our kids is an opportunity to shape them, nourish their passions and encourage their dreams.

The future is now! Here are 10 careers that are here to stay; and the soft skills required to not only excel at them but also be happy in them:

New Movie Review: Breathe

January 18, 2018

Coming to life on the big screen: an inspiring love story of hope and determination

What would you do if your husband’s life suddenly changed irrevocably and he is about to give up hope?

Breathe, a heart-warming and highly emotional celebration of bravery and human possibility comes to life on the big screen around the country on 19 January 2018.  Based on real-life events, this inspiring film featuring Claire Foy (Season of the Witch, Going Postal) and Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, The Amazing Spiderman, Silence, Never Let Me Go), is a love story about living every breath as though it’s your last.

This motion picture is actor, Andy Serkis’s (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Rise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) directorial debut and he worked very closely with scriptwriter, William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Misérables, First Knight) to tell the story of his best friend and producer, Jonathan Cavendish’s (Bridget Jones’ Diary, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) parents with the sensitivity and empathy that it deserved.

Adventurous and charismatic, Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) has his whole life ahead of him when he is paralysed by polio whilst in Africa at the age of twenty-eight. Against all advice, Robin’s wife Diana brings him home from hospital where her devotion and witty determination transcends his disability. Together they refuse to be imprisoned by his suffering; dazzling others with their humour, courage, and lust for life.

They also use their own story to inspire other people who are going through similar circumstances. Clever technology makes it possible for Robin to ‘get out of bed’ and experience new adventures and enables him to become an advocate for disabled people across the world.

The movie, which is set in the 1950’s, not only boasts a beautiful set and costume design, but also a star-studded cast.

“The most important thing to get was their love for each other. I didn’t want to over-sentimentalise her; and she definitely doesn’t want to be seen as a saint, or an angel, or incredible sort of nurse. It was actually just true love,” says Foy about getting into character for this part.  Foy has been praised for her accurate portrayal of Diana Cavendish.

Hugh Bonneville, who has already been nominated for BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his role in Downtown Abbey, and Tom Hollander (Mission Impossible, About Time, Pirates of the Caribbean) can also be seen in the movie.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and was also screened at the Opening Night Gala at the BFI London Film Festival. It has already been nominated for an Archie Award for Best First Feature at the Philadelphia Film Festival and Best Makeup and Hair Design and Sound at the Independent British Film Awards. During the Heartland Film Festival, it won the Truly Moving Picture Award.

It will appeal to audiences of all ages, but especially if you enjoyed The Theory of Everything, Lion, The Imitation Game and Brooklyn.

This inspirational movie is distributed by Ster-Kinekor Entertainment and will be at the following cinemas from 19 January:

We’ve decided to grow our already big family, even bigger!

January 7, 2018

I cannot remember ever being this excited about entering a new year as I am about 2018. Allot has happened leading up to the new year. We’ve moved house (I’ll tell you all about that in another post) and we’ve also decided it’s time to open our hearts a little wider and make the family a little bigger! I know right now you’re thinking I’m crazy since we already have three kids, but I can assure you my mental status is just fine. In fact, it’s a fabmom proven fact that the bigger the family grows, the bigger one’s heart becomes and the more love there is to share.

But, you can relax, because the new family member that will be occupying our hearts and home, while she is indeed my baby, is a fur baby.

You may be sighing with relief, but, Paris, our miniature schnauzer will in many ways be my fourth child. And I’m okay with that. We’ve prepared for her arrival for a long time. We’ve discussed and debated – between myself and Lesley, between us and the kids – and the right time has finally arrived. Jada cannot wait to have another girl in the house, and the boys I’m sure is just happy to have another partner in ‘crime.’

It’s also a very exciting time for Lesley and I. We’re becoming parents again! We’re fully aware of the amount of attention our ‘new baby’ will require, and also the chaos that is sure to follow, but more importantly, we’re excited about all the extra love and laughter that will fill our home. Even though we’ve been discussing getting a dog ever since Jada was born almost 8 years ago, we were just never ready – and it’s very important that you make a big decision like this only once you’re 100% certain you’re ready to make your pet as much a part of your family as your very own children.

Here’s how our family prepared for Paris’ arrival (who is only allowed to come home with us within another 3 weeks from now as she’s still drinking on her mama.)

1.  I’m very mildly OCD when it comes to a clean house, so I naturally wanted a dog that sheds very little hair. This is what made the miniature schnauzer so appealing to us at first.

2. We’ve always included the kids in our conversations about what dogs will be a good fit for our family. We would Google images of the dogs, read about their temperament and habits and make sure the kids understood and were happy with the kind of dog we’re getting.

3. The reason we decided to wait until the kids were bigger is exactly for this reason – to involve them in everything from the decision-making to caring for the dog.

4. Our family is big on giving back and our first thought was to adopt, but the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, unfortunately, at the time of inquiry, did not have any puppies of the particular dog we were looking for, and we really wanted the dog to grow up along with our kids. I would, however, recommend adoption as a first option if you are ever ready to grow your hearts and home.

5. We realised that getting a dog is probably the best way to keep fit as they require lots of exercise. Even this fits right in with our goal to stay healthy and active together as a family.

6. We would stop people walking their schnauzers on the beach to talk about their experiences. This has been very helpful to us in making our final decision.

7. Once our minds were made up and we’ve met with the breeder, it was all downhill from there. Although our pup cannot yet join us at home, we’ve already grown to love her immensely, the kids have already agreed on a name and although we haven’t quite pup proofed our home or ran out to the pet store for food and supplies, we cannot wait for her arrival and look forward making beautiful memories as a complete family.

Say hello to Paris our fur baby 🙂

And her gorgeous mum & dad

Love,
