The Investment App. for Busy Moms

May 17, 2017

To address the poor savings culture in South Africa, long-term insurer, Liberty unveils its unique solution to remove the complexity and fear associated with investing. Stash.

So, what is Stash?

It’s an App you can easily download on your phone.

Downloading Stash is quick, convenient and simple. The average user takes 49 seconds to set up their Stash – from start to finish. When you download Stash from your Play Store, you get R50 up front just for signing up and to kick start your investment journey. Every time you refer a friend, you are rewarded with R10 added to your Stash account.

It eliminates the need to see a financial adviser.

This investment app was designed to break through all the complicated investment jargon, processes, tedious forms, cashing out difficulties and reduces the amount of time it takes to meet with a financial adviser.

It’s investment made as easy as tweeting.

Juan Labuschagne, head of development at Stash says, “When it comes to investing, getting started is the hardest part. I can remember the homework I had to do to make sense of where I was putting my money. It seemed like too much work and I kept putting it off. Investing should be as easy as tweeting – that’s the goal of Stash.”

You decide how much you want to Stash.

Users decide how much they want to stash. The app rounds up the amount of every transaction. If a user decides that their Stash limit per transaction is R10 and they make a transaction for R45, this would be rounded up to R50. The R5 in change is stashed.

 The team explains…

“All this spare change accumulates without interfering with your day-to-day life. Stash checks your daily bank balance and never transfers more than you can afford, so you don’t have to worry about going into overdraft. Before you know it you’ll have a significant Stash balance. Your Stash grows as fast as South Africa’s biggest companies do because your spare change is invested in South Africa’s top 100 listed companies.” Labuschagne explains,

 Did someone say Tax-free?

An additional benefit of Stash is that you don’t pay any tax on the cash that is stashed. You can invest up to R33,000 a year, up to R500,000 over your lifetime, into your tax-free investment. These limits go across ALL your tax-free savings accounts you may have. You are not taxed on the growth of your money, not penalised when you cash out and can put in or withdraw money whenever you like.

 Great news for Android users.

Stash is currently available for Android-powered mobile phones. “In South Africa, 9 out of 10 smartphones are Android devices. Our goal is to get Stash in the hands of as many people as possible, so focusing on 90% of the market was ideal,” concludes Labuschagne.

Easy access to the stock market.

Stash is an investment first, truly created for the ordinary man in the street, taking less than a minute to set up. It is the first app in South Africa that gives novice investors access to the power of the stock market with zero fees.

Plus, investors can access their money whenever they need it.

Stash has very good viewer ratings and reviews and can be downloaded to your phone directly from the Android App Store here

Old Mill Guest House and Restaurant Swellendam

April 26, 2017

After having driven 2.5 hours to see the faeries at the Faerie continent of Sulina, we were famished and having never been to Swellendam, we decided to give the Old Mill a try. It was just before 2 pm on a Sunday afternoon and it was very quiet. More peaceful than quiet rather and it seemed we have just missed the Sunday lunch rush. We took our seats on the lower deck and welcomed the peace and quiet of the Overberg.

By this time the kids were also pretty worn out from the long drive and all the excitement of the morning that for once they didn’t mind the quiet at all. They devoured their tasty burgers from the kiddies menu while chatting away about all that’s happened and as soon as the food had pumped life back into them, were off running around the restaurant’s large decks to see how many of the acorns laying around, they could find. Lesley and I finished our delicious chicken breast with mushroom sauce, rice, and veggies which reminded us of a home cooked meal. It felt like Sunday’s at grandmas house. It and the hospitality were that amazing. This is definitely a place we will return to whenever we’re in town.

Needless to say, the kids were out like lights on our way back to the Cape. We woke them just before we drove through the Huguenot tunnel as they would never have forgiven us for letting them miss it.

It was a day well spent and one we would like to recreate soon!

Fairies Are Real

April 25, 2017

…or so we were assured by the wonderful folk of Sulina.

Hidden not-too-deep in the valley of Swellendam, is the continent of Sulina, or Faerie Sanctuary as it’s lovingly known, founded by Ian and Minky Sulin more than 25 years ago.

When I first heard of this magical place I just knew I had to take the kids there. More accurately, I knew Jada would be blown away and I’ll once again be mom of the year!

So we took to the road one Sunday morning early after breakfast and began our almost three-hour journey from Kraaifontein. Luckily we packed snacks and made sure the USB was loaded with all our favourite jams which kept the kids, Lesley and me, happily entertained all the way there. The breathtaking views as we passed one wine farm after another also contributed largely in making the drive so much more enjoyable.

I made a mental note to pack a picnic basket the next time we decide to visit and stop at one of the many dams along the way.

We arrived just after 11 am to find a beautiful, sunshiny and serene Swellendam, with a car full of excited kids and adults. Although the sanctuary, where the faerie folk lives, is well hidden, there are signs all along the road directing you there, almost from the moment you arrive in the ‘dorpie.’

When we finally reach our destination, we are surprised to find so much than what we hoped for. Except for Jada, who was expecting to be greeted by tiny flying, sparkly winged beings, but was soon filled with all kinds of excitement as we made our way through the enchanted garden with gnomes, angels, unicorns, sleeping dragons and of cause, faeries nestled behind, on top and in-between flowers and plants and red polka dot mushrooms. She was even more thrilled when the hosts showed us an image of a picture taken right there in the garden, of a real-life fairy. The image was even blown up double its size to prove to every hopeful 6-year-old  and skeptical adult, that faeries may very well exist. And if indeed they do, then I bet The continent of Sulina is where they all hangout.

The boys were just happy to have found the charming play area which neither wanted to leave without being dragged out. One could literally spend hours between the faerie folk and still not have had enough time. But we were hungry and needed to eat and decided we’ll be back again very soon.

I Tried Fitchef For a Month

April 24, 2017
No Preservatives / Additives
No added sugar
Low GI

When I learned about the Fitchef concept a few months back, I didn’t think their meals would be any good. Honestly, the thought of frozen foods being both healthy, nutritious AND tasty, sounded crazy.

A mother of three and ever curious, I decided to see for myself what all the hoo-hah was about.  Anything promising more time to myself and my family and less time in the kitchen was worth at least a try.

IT WAS AMAZING!

For an entire month, I lived on nothing other than fitchef meals and drinks, then found myself wondering how I will ever go back to my ‘normal’ way of life again.

After only 2 weeks my tummy was visibly flatter

Here are just a few other things I observed during my month with Fitchef:

The chef must be some undercover world-class cook. The food was surprisingly tasty.

I have never tasted better smoothies or knew they COULD possibly taste so good. I just thought health smoothies were SUPPOSED to taste bad.

I finally get it. Healthy doesn’t always mean tasteless

The effects are almost instant. I immediately felt better about myself after starting my fitchef meal plan.

I didn’t weigh or measure myself at any time during the month, but I definitely lost a few kilos as I felt absolutely wonderful in my clothes.

It’s a way of life. You can never go back to ‘normal’ once you’ve started a fitchef mealplan. It’s THAT good.

No bloating or indigestion.

Even with  (wholewheat) rice and pasta, I got a flatter tummy! Score!

Did I mention the smoothies and juices are AMAZING!? Well, then you have to try the power shots.

One Elements meal package is unfortunately not enough to feed my family of five.

However, it was enough for me, for a month,  and saved me heaps of time and worry about what healthy meal to prepare for myself next.

It’s okay to spoil yourself, mom.

It is not cheap but definitely is worth it. Besides the food, you’re getting quality of life, more time with your family; and a smaller waist line.

FitChef is no longer certified Halaal. They do suggest their vegetarian meal option or a 21 Day or 1 Month Vegetarian Challenge and then adding your own Halaal meats.

The shot box was my ultimate favourite and made me feel instantly awake

Drink Away Inflammation (Guest Post)

April 18, 2017

You don’t have to be old to start experiencing inflammation problems.

There are a plenty reasons for experiencing inflammation and often it has something to do with the kind of food you eat. This is why you need to change your eating habits before it is too late.

Start by removing unhealthy drinks from your diet. Soda and alcohol are a big NO. They contain a lot of sugar and other unhealthy ingredients that may worsen inflammation. Choose healthier drinks instead.

Try a Leafy Greens Smoothie

It is made from blended green vegetables. You may choose 2 different green leafy vegetables and toss them in the blender. Once properly blended, add mango, pineapple, and banana for better taste. Blend the ingredients again until everything is smooth.

The benefit of this drink is that it’s totally organic. You may have to adjust to the taste at first, but you will learn to like it after a few tries.

Turmeric Latte

You normally use turmeric in making curry powder. This drink doesn’t taste like curry, but it has a strong taste. The good thing is that it also contains a lot of antioxidants that are good for your health.

To make one:

Gently warm the almonds in a saucepan.

Add coconut milk, but do not bring to a boil.

Add turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger.

The last ingredient is coconut oil. Wait until all the ingredients were melted before removing them from the saucepan.

Kombucha

This is becoming a more popular energy drink. The taste seems a bit weird, but once you think of all the health benefits, you can say that it is worth the taste.

-Dissolve sugar in hot water.

-Stir until sugar is dissolved before adding Kombucha tea.

-Remove the bag after a few minutes.

-Add a starter tea or distilled white vinegar.

-Then, add an active Kombucha Scoby.

Cover the mixture with a towel or coffee filter and let it sit there for several days.

If you let it sit longer, the less sweet and sour it becomes. You may add flavours in your drink so it won’t be as sour as it originally is. Just make sure you don’t add too much sugar or else it forfeits the purpose of being a healthy drink.

It might be a bit of a challenge if you shift to these healthier beverages, but in no time, you’ll learn to love the taste of these drinks, and even forget about soda or alcohol altogether.

For a more healthy drink options, check out the infographic below. Find one that matches your taste and stick with it. You may also try all of them and find out which one is perfect for you.
