This superior romantic comedy was a surprising joy to watch. Steve Carell acts like an adult for a change, and he was ably supported by a great cast in Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore, as well as a terrific storyline that was very mature and funny at the same time.
Carell plays Cal, whose marriage falls apart early on in the movie, the very first scene in fact. So “whereto from here?” is the underlying question for the middle-aged father of two. Trying to re-enter the dating game with the help of romantic-lothario Jacob leads to various shenanigans and revelations which I will not spoil here. Suffice it to say, this is not simply your usual rom-com.
The performances are strong and witty, and the script has so many surprises and twists that it’s hard not to fall in love with the movie and its characters.
It’s about love: between partners, between parents and their kids, and between kids and their crushes. And love really is maybe not as crazy and stupid as we think it is.
Terrific movie! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
