5 fashion essentials (Not just every mom) should buy cheap

August 19, 2016

As a mom I am always on the run. And I don’t mean on the treadmill or even after my kids for that matter.

I’m always on the run to work, coffee with a friend, the shops, Spur with the kids,  after a story for my blog, on my husband’s nerves (yes, I sometimes work on his nerves too) and then of cause we cannot ignore the inevitable school functions.

It’s a fact that no matter where I go or what I do, I like to look good doing it. However, chances are phenomenal I’m going to spill something while I’m at it and it is most likely going to be on myself. I am for this reason striking against contrary belief that all staple fashion items needs to be quality and therefore expensive. In fact I’m now convinced they should be as cheap as you can get them so you don’t feel so guilty when spilling coffee or pasta all over them. can I get an Amen!

Here’s 5 fashion essentials I believe every mom should buy on the cheap

T-shirts

I’m a t-shirt gal. I dress them up and down to suit any occasion and the plain white tee is my all time fave. According to Glamour you should Stock up and not feel guilty if you have to toss it eventually due to spills, stains, or discoloration.

Trendy sunglasses

I’ve come across the coolest, trendiest and bad-ass sunnies sold at many a robot around town for R50.  R20 depending on your negotiating skills.

Not only do I quickly get tired of one style, but i also always lose them.

Glamour says to spend more on that classic black pair you’ll wear forever, but go low when doing funky shapes or bold colors.

Ballet flats

I will never forget the day my daughter’s crazy aunt bought her not one, but two pairs of accessorize ballet flats for R500 each! They both literally only lasted a month. My heart just broke. Not for my daughter, but the beautiful flats.

Adult or child, these beauties take quite a beating and they are so delicate, damage is unavoidable. But they are just so darn cute! So why not buy the cheapies in diffrent styles and color. You’ll be better able to achieve the carefree attitude we so associate with French-girl style.

Thongs
Glamour agrees with me in saying yes to spending more for a beautifully fitted bra, and no thanks to overpriced thongs. There are just way too many cute and cheaper options available.

Sweatpants

I love that the athleisure era is upon us. It means we don’t need any excuse for wearing our yoga pants and sweats almost everyday, every where. Guilty!! Lucky for me there’s little difference between a R100 pair and a R500 one.

Weekend Style Crush: The “Ballerina skirt” AKA The Tulle Skirt

July 8, 2016

Who cares that the tulle skirt has been a popular fashion item for a couple of years now. Some styles are simply here to stay and the tulle skirt has proven to be one of them. If you haven’t already gotten your hands on one of these beauties, then I’m here to remind you exactly why owning one or more can save you from any fashion-malfunction you are most likely to encounter this Winter. Tulle is fun and, by wearing it to any occasion other than a ballet recital or your wedding, tells people around you allot about your spontaneity. What’s more is it promises to bring every one of your drab pieces of clothing currently in your closet back to life.

Wearing your tulle skirt in Summer is pretty easy, but there’s also plenty ways to pull it off  in Winter and NOT look like you’re competing for the lead role in Swan lake.

Cape Town is well-loved for its gorgeous Winter sun, on which days a light and breezy skirt such as the tulle is perfect. Hell it even brightens up the dreary rainy days. It is also a handy accessory for whenever you may need a pick-me-upper or want to show others your fun, flirty and carefree side.

Whether you have tried any of these styles or whether you have been too afraid to take the risk, you have to admit they are pretty darn adorable; and just in case you have forgotten, I am happy to remind you of the best ways to wear your tulle skirt these cold Winter months.

With these beauties being so popular right now, you can easily find them at stores countrywide. Elemental Emporium has them in Black, White, Grey, Mint and Cerise Pink for R560.

Wear this edgy look for a date night with your man

Weekend Style Crush: Nude Trench Coat

June 11, 2016

This weekend happens to be exceptionally cold in the Cape – possibly the coldest it’s been since the temperature started to drop in April. Apparently, I hear, it is snowing somewhere on the mountains and all I can think of is snuggling up in bed with a Sylvia Day novel and hot chocolate. Unfortunately this is not immediately possible for me, because well, I’m a mom. So to keep me warm during my rush from one kiddie activity to the next, the mall, work and dates with my man, is my new found love the trench.

A few weeks ago someone told me my nude trench I was wearing that day, makes me look extra hot. Which I thought was great because this is exactly the objective I was going for when I bought it. However, this was not the “hot” he was referring to. It apparently made him think of a femme fetale showing up at his hotel room with nothing on but a nude trench coat. This got me laughing out loud, but then it also made me think about the sexy connotation the trench coat possess. It automatically by definition brings a fierceness to any outfit.

The origin of the trench coat dates back to the first world war and was primarily worn by the highest ranked military officials. Since then it’s become a fashion staple and will most likely remain a classic piece in many a closet for all time.

The online fashion outlet Superbalist has them in all shapes and sizes, colours and prices. However, this is but one of many stores around the country currently stocking these gems. You can basically get them everywhere. Whatever your budget, it is definitely worth the investment, simply because it goes with absolutely everything and can be worn for every occasion. I have included below my favourite looks and I know they will inspire you too!

Marvelous Mothers Breakfast

May 7, 2016

I am already looking forward to next year’s Marvelous Moms Breakfast!

I immediately bought my ticket from Computicket when I saw this event advertised in the mall one day while out doing my shopping. I have to admit, I got it purely on impulse and my inherent curiosity, with no idea what to expect other than the already obvious fact that I was going to enjoy breakfast with a few other marvelous moms. This, for me, was enough. As you know by now, I jump at any opportunity that involves me getting to meet other fabulous moms and boy was I happy I jumped at this one.

The event was well planned and beautifully organized. I was particularly impressed with the attention to detail in the french country decor.

On my arrival, I was immediately escorted to my table and goodie bag with a host of products from stores all over the mall. I already felt spoiled and was diligently offered a cup of coffee before the Mothers day celebrations began. The energy all around me was tangible and infectious.

The MC and Radio Helderberg presenter, Ricardo, was quite a treat with his wit and charisma and immediately put everyone at ease. Throughout the event, he never tired from interacting with the crowd and making the mommas feel as special as they truly are. This impressed me and spoke volumes of the amount of thought the organisers put into this day.

Besides the great spokesperson, we also had Sorbet, Inglot and Curves at our service for any beauty and wellness questions and free makeovers. Although the advice was appreciated, I rather enjoyed the freebies and vouchers more. I mean, who doesn’t love a freebie!?

But, the highlight of the morning was no doubt, the hour long pep talk we received from renowned fashion stylists and best friends, Marilize De Clercq and Andrea Timmis.

Marilize, I was happy to learn, is an image consultant and personal shopper for fabiani, she’s featured on Top Billing, Pasella and Expresso and together with Andrea, been appointed as Canal Walk’s stylist for their Season Fashion Trend Catalogue.

That’s not all – Marilize is also design director for Captive8 – a plus size female clothing brand which has made its mark in the South African fashion industry.  You can read more about this phenomenal mom on The Vivid Luxury Blog.

She also provides personal shopping & styling to her clients. Call 082 223 6007 or Email styling@marilizedeclercq.co.za and visit her styling realm at http://www.marilizedeclercq.co.za

After discussing the latest trends and learning about how to embrace and flatter the body parts we are most unhappy with, my mind was full and satisfied. And so was my tummy, after devouring the most delish bacon and eggs wrap from Torrador and then also devouring the carrot cake in record time.

2 hours of pure bliss and our breakfast finally came to an end. It is hard to believe I paid only R150 for such an absolutely amazing time. I guess money really can’t buy happiness and great company.

I want to thank Cape Gate and Torrador, along with all the other sponsors mentioned above, for the truly Marvelous Mothers Day treat.

Here’s a few styling tips I learned from the ladies:

  • Nudes are the new black
  • It hasn’t been called ‘peach’ since after the 90’s. It’s now nude, tan or rose gold.
  • You MUST invest in a nude shoe and bag
  • Diagonal lines are flattering for the figure
  • The three top looks for this season: Boho (Prints), Sport lux (Sneakers) and 70’s (Colour)
  • If you’re going for any of these looks, keep it minimal and classic.
  • Embrace your big booty. Instead of hiding it, show it off by wearing the right colours.
  • Make sure you wear the right color clothes for you. This can make you look at least 5 years younger.
  • Tussles are in. The older you are the less tussles.
  • Get at least 4 pants, 4 tops and shirts and 4 blazers and jackets. Then make sure they all go together.
  • throw out things you do not wear. When in doubt, throw them out.
  • Double breasted coats and polo necks are not flattering for big busts.
  • You need at least one pair of ripped or distressed jeans in your wardrobe.
  • Make sure to wear the right underwear. Size and style.
  • To look taller, make sure your pants and shoes are the same colour.

Happy Mother’s day Fab moms!

My Weekend Style Crush – The Ankle Boot

March 27, 2015

Who’s going to boot camp with me? 🙂

I’m not a big Winter enthusiast. It’s cold, it’s wet and it requires too many layers of clothing and tissues. Good thing we have snazzy ankle boots to cheer us up when this dreadful season comes along!

I have found some amazing styles and colours from shops everywhere, but fell head-over-boots in love with these Aldo and Foschini ones in particular! Check ’em out! 🙂
