Weekend Style Crush: Velvet

April 13, 2018

I’m not sure how long Velvet has been around, but it’s been around for awhile, and for a long time was considered so high-end that it was worn only by royalty and the very rich, due to the complex and time-consuming technique to create it.

Thankfully those days are now where they belong…in the past. Velvet or Valour (its knitted sibling) can now easily be found in department stores and fashion boutiques everywhere and at reasonable prices.

There’s no doubt that it’s this, and every other season’s must-have fabric, and in recent years saw many celebs sporting the trend – From Nicole Kidman at the BAFTA’s, to a very pregnant Blake Lively at the Cannes Film Festival, and Victoria Beckham in the streets of New York… because she’s Victoria Beckham.

Although Velvet has always been synonymous with glamour, it can very easily be toned down with denim or a t-shirt for date night, a meeting or work lunch. It’s also super comfy and soft, a definite plus for us moms, and perfect for adding just the right amount of fab to a usually drab outfit.

How to rock the trend

Remember to ALWAYS read the care label on your velvet before cleaning, and when in doubt, dry-clean!

Happy March 2018! #YouCanBeAnything

March 1, 2018

Besides this being both my and my son’s birthday month, I am also extremely excited for and proud of  Mattel’s continued efforts to help our children recognize a broader view of beauty with their Barbie Fashionista range which incorporates the diversity that surrounds us all the time.

So many times we look back and reminisce the old days when life was ‘easier’ and ‘kids were kids’. So many ugly and negative things today we wish our kids were never exposed to. Perhaps the old days were good days, but that certainly does not mean they were any better than they are today. Among many others, the “Me Too” movement has proven how far we’ve actually come and how much we, as a human race, have matured. If you really think about it, we have more power today to make things so much better than what they were yesterday.

My sweet daughter is turning 8 this year and even though I have been buying her Barbie dolls for a long time, Barbie only really started to appeal to her very recently. A tender time in a young girl’s life – she’s just come from toddler-hood and nearing adolescence. It’s important that our young girls are exposed to positivity about their bodies, their skin colour, their hair types and even their sense of style.

It is perhaps no coincidence that the Barbie brand celebrates its 59th anniversary the day after International Women’s Day on 8 March 2018, celebrating women from all walks of life, all shapes, all sizes, all colours, and all creeds.

The Barbie Fashionista range has its roots in 2015, which saw the launch of a brand new Barbie crew featuring 23 dolls with a range of skin tones, facial structures, and hair colours. The popularity of the new line saw the official launch of the Fashionista label in 2016, with the introduction of three new body types – tall, curvy and petite – seven skin tones, 14 facial structures, 22 eye colours and 24 hairstyles. Plus, of course, countless new on-trend fashions and accessories to suit each individual doll, from casually cool and boho bold, to elegant evening wear and pretty much everything in between!

In 2017, this remarkable range won the coveted Toy of the Year award, in the Doll category, for its bold introduction of diversity, literally changing the face of the stereotypical Barbie brand by introducing new dolls with new body shapes, new face shapes, new skin tones, and new hairstyles.

The importance of exposing our children to diversity and providing them with imaginative toys that allow them to see themselves in their imaginary play cannot be overstated. Today, the Fashionista range features over 100 dolls of diverse appearance, and it continues to grow.

The 2018 range will bring with it even more variety, introducing another four body types, nine skin tones, 13 face-sculpts, nine eye colours, 11 hair colours and 13 hairstyles.

“Barbie has always given girls choices – from her 180 careers, to inspirational roles, to her countless fashions and accessories,” says Andrea Ziella, Head of Marketing and Trade Marketing, Mattel SA. “These new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them – the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them.”

Barbie fans can now choose their Barbie to look just like them or create a group of friends to mimic their own friendship circles.

By allowing our children to choose a Barbie in their own image, or in the image of their best friend, or favourite actress, singer, movie star, or sporting hero, we are encouraging them to see the beauty that not only lies in their own shape, colour, and style but also in the various shapes, colours and styles that surround them.

We live in an increasingly diverse world, it is not only natural but crucial, that our children’s imaginary worlds represent this diversity.

Sunglass Hutt Launch V&A Waterfront And why you deserve good sunnies

November 17, 2017

Good, durable, and absolutely beautiful sunglasses are a necessity. As parents, we tend to, consciously or unconsciously, shy away from beautiful things. It’s either too valuable to have around kids, or it’s too expensive considering what it cost to keep a child alive these days, or we are simply too forgetful and don’t trust ourselves around beautiful things. I agree these are all valid points, I fall into all three categories, but what if these beautiful things are not simply luxury, but essential? Good sunglasses with UV and polaroid protection is indeed essential, and it doesn’t hurt if they’re gorgeous too. Come rain or shine, when you’re a busy parent, a decent pair of sunnies should be a part of your everyday survival kit.

On Wednesday, 15 November 2017, Sunglass Hutt V&A Waterfront opened their doors to the growing number of style-seekers in Cape Town, and the stunning sunglasses I got to try on, made me see exactly what I have been missing. Sure, it’s tempting to get a pair of inexpensive sunglasses from smaller stores or from the many lovely markets we are host to, but there’s something about holding a Mui Jim, Michael Kors, Prada, Versace or even a Ray ban up to your face and seeing yourself in the mirror. With the right pair of sunnies you can literally take on the world, and if you are going to spoil yourself, you might as well do it with the friendly people over at Sunglass Hutt.

These investment pieces are a must, especially when wearing contacts, as I do – it helps with light-sensitivity, removes that annoying glare and even protects your eyes against sunburn and the risk skin cancer. Your health and that of your eyes are important too.

Find them: Shop 7206, Upper Level, Victoria Wharf, Phone: 021 4188534, Email: sgh2665@sunglasshut.co.za, Website: http://www.sunglasshut.com

After Canapés and drinks, we were treated to an evening of song and dance with the likes of Vicky Sampson, Alt Ego, Craig Lucas, Jimmy Nevis and so much more great, acclaimed South African artists. I managed to capture a glimpse of the fun on my Samsung  S8 🙂

Enjoy and remember to rock your hot new sunnies this season!

Weekend Style Crush – The Classic Slip Dress and Birkenstock

October 5, 2017

Who doesn’t love a good fashion throwback? And bonus points if said throwback is also the current hot trend…again!

This week I’m crushing on the controversial underwear-as-outerwear slip dress and the uber comfy Birkenstock (remind me again why these ever went out of style in the first place?).

Let’s have a closer look at two of the most sought-after fashion staples of the 90’s.

Wiki reminds us that of the designers most notably associated with the slip dress include John Galliano, whose debut design for Dior was a lace-trimmed slip dress worn by Diana in 1996, which is likely around the time the spaghetti strapped satin wonder became all the rage and was seen at pretty much every dressy event. Who didn’t want to be Princess Diana in the early 1990’s!

Although this novelty soon wore off, it has made a major comeback in recent years. Only now it’s not only something to wear to a fancy dress or matric ball. You can now wear your slip dress with just about anything, to anywhere.

Who knows how long the slip dress is going to stick around this time, so why not make the most of it by styling yours with a few casual items from your wardrobe, whether you’re on your way to work, a meetup with the girls or date night.

Why not pair your slip dress with another 90’s favourite, the Birkenstock.

Now, if you’re over thirty or in your late twenties, I know you owned a pair of these babies in some form, size and colour back in the lovely 90s, but the Birkenstock actually has a pretty amazing birth story.

The sandal was founded in Germany and after World War II (1939-1945) was popular among returning soldiers because of its orthopedic support.

American, Margot Fraser “discovered” Birkenstock sandals while visiting a spa in Germany. She gained relief from a foot condition and founded a trading company called Birkenstock Footprint Sandals, Inc., in Novato, California, based on her enthusiasm for the sandals.

The rest, as you know, is history and in the early 1990’s “Birks” enjoyed a surge of popularity.

Both slip dress and Birkenstock is locally Available at Spree and Superbalist

Let’s all rock the 90’s this Summer!

Why sneakers are this Summer’s staple Items

September 28, 2017

If you know me, and you follow (and have lived through) my occasional fashion outbursts, you’ll know that I am totally a sneaker gal.  I could wear them with absolutely anything I can find in my wardrobe. What can I say, I’m a mom, so I like the convenience and comfort sneakers offer. And they’re cute! As I wrote in another post, these babies are perfect all year round – also in Summer.

Since the trend’s growing popularity and women, in particular, moving away from simply pairing their gorgeous sneaks with just track pants and jeans, there is such a large variety available to choose from.
