It is that time of year again, where we are trading the salads and water for comfort foods and warm beverages such a coffee and tea; but more specifically tea as it is in my case.
My only daughter is turning 6 soon and finds nothing more appetising than a cup of tea (not the kids variety) and a beautifully decorated cupcake. I used to think she only loves cupcakes so much because they are so gorgeous to look at, but I soon discovered that unless the icing is a certain level of sweet, she was going to do nothing but just that; look at it. I have therefore made it my life’s mission to find the most affordable and most adorable high tea cafes and restaurants in Cape Town.
While going through the many options available in Cape Town, and believe me there’s many, I realized there are few better ways to tell a daughter, sister, mother or friend how truly special they are to you, than treating them to a fancy cafe serving delicious cakes and amazing tea of every kind imaginable.
When I think of “high tea,” the first few names of pristine and reputable locations that comes to mind are the likes of the Belmond Mount Nelson, The One and Only and the Taj Hotel. They are also the first three recommendations for this event on almost every blog and website. However great, these are just not the places I am going to take my daughter to every time we feel like an afternoon out to bond and enjoy some cake and tea (which may be quite often.) Besides these places being a ‘teensy’ bit expensive, they do in many instances, if not all, require you to make prior bookings.
So although I will most certainly treat my daughter or any of my loved ones to one of these from time to time, I have put together a more cost effective and accessible list of five other options where you will most likely get the same service and quality, minus the bellhop.
